Literature Text

May is here,  without fear,  spreading cheer  far and near;
Her return can make all creatures feel alright.
In the glade,  unafraid,  stand displayed  finely-made
Yellow flowerlets aglint amidst the light.
Through the grass they're already a-springing!
In the wold  ring untold,  manifold  voices bold;
It has never heard such lovely singing!
The original lyrics, in (early) Middle High German:

Maienzît âne nît vröuden gît widerstrît;
sîn widerkomen kan uns allen hëlfen.
Ûf dëm plân âne wân siht man stân wolgetân
liehtiu brûniu blüemel bî dën gëlfen;
durch daȥ gras sint sî schôn ûf gedrungen.
Und dër walt manecvalt ungezalt ist erschalt,
daȥ ër wart mit dëm nie baȥ gesungen.

This song is ascribed to the early minnesinger Nîthart von Riuwental (a.k.a. Neidhart von Reuental), who lived from the late 1100s to the mid 1200s. As I've mentioned before in other submissions, he's one of my favourite composers.
